So What’s Coming Out for the Wii U? 2014 Edition

This past Thursday Nintendo spoke Directly to the world once more though it again failed to be forthcoming with new information regarding upcoming Wii U titles.

Despite boasting dozens of 3DS software announcements, the same old combo of Super Smash Bros, Bayonetta 2 and Mario Kart 8 were wheeled out for the Wii U with just snippets of new game play footage and little else (though a firm May release date was finally given to MK 8). I think NES Remix 2 - a game that essentially recycles decades-old NES titles in mini-game form – was the solitary new announcement for the system.

So we’re forced to wonder once again – what exactly is coming out for the Wii U?

The current 2014 line-up is not as bad as one might think. It’s not stellar – especially with boxed third-party titles having almost non-existent now – but there is at least a decent amount of exclusives to tide the Wii U faithful over.

The upcoming crop of downloadable eShop offerings is looking surprisingly healthy with dozens set to release including Child of Light, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, 1001 Spikes and Monochroma. There are so many, in fact, that I won’t list them all here for brevity’s sake. This article also won’t cover Virtual Console releases either as Nintendo rarely announce these ahead of time (though we do know DS and Game Boy Advance games are coming at some point in 2014… just not to their natural portable home of the 3DS).

One more caveat before the list – bear in mind that the majority of console games tend to release in the third and fourth quarters of a year and the three platform holders don’t tend to show their hands regarding these until the summertime, primarily at the E3 Expo. In short – expect a lot more to be confirmed, announced and released in the second half of the year. Unless Nintendo completely drops the ball, that is.
