MS: Street Fighter II

Even if you’re not immersed in the nitty-gritty of the lauded, genre-defining game play of Street Fighter II, there’s a great deal of others things to love about it. One such thing is its soundtrack.

yoko-shimomura

Yoko Shimomura created the majority of SF II’s music. One of the few prominent female composers in games, her wide range of credits include the Kingdom Hearts and Mario RPG series.

Composers Yoko Shimomura and Isao Abe managed to create a remarkable blend of catchy melodies and blood-pumping beats that not only get you hyped to play, but also encapsulates each of the fighters and their respective home countries.

At this point, it must be one of the most recurring and most heard scores in gaming. Since it début in 1991, it’s been rearranged for the multitudinous editions of Street Fighter II, made a triumphant return in Street Fighter IV and its numerous versions, been referenced in many Street Fighter spin-offs and other games from developer Capcom, and has even been the focus of at least one major Internet meme.

While I don’t have any official numbers, given SF II‘s ubiquity and the sheer number of unofficial arrangements that I’ve see online, it has to be one of the most fan-remixed soundtracks. Heck, game music collective OCRemix has two complete albums dedicated to SF II, one of which was commissioned by Capcom for use in the 2008 HD re-imagining of Super Street Fighter II Turbo.
