Our Musical Showcases have been getting a bit lengthy lately so with The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds out this week it’s a doubly good time to highlight the score of the game’s predecessor, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

That’s because, in many ways, Koji Kondo’s soundtrack speaks for itself. Not just because it’s one of the best-known, most-loved soundtracks to one of the best-known, most-loved games of all-time. Straight from the awesome title screen it grabs you with both hands and doesn’t let go until the end of the serene, moving credits track.

Koji Kondo has worked at Nintendo since 1984 and has created some of the best-loved compositions in gaming for the Mario, Zelda and Star Fox franchises.

It birthed many of the series’ long-running theme tunes including those associated with arch villain Ganon, Kakariko Village, Hyrule Castle and the Princess herself. Even if you’ve never played A Link to the Past (you should probably rectify that if you haven’t by now) but have played any other Zelda released since 1991, you’ve heard its music.

It was hard to highlight just one track from a score that is top-to-bottom filled with classics but I’m going with that track that plays over the credits. Nintendo, particularly through their Zelda titles, have a habit of having incredible musical finales and this was one of the first I remember. I don’t have the words to describe how beautiful it was and still is.

Want more LttP arrangements beyond the original Super NES renditions? Its official album Legend of Zelda: Sound & Drama and good ol’ OCRemix are great places to start.
